Shakir wins boys u-18 singles title

M A Shakir displaying top class tennis clinched the under-18 singles
title defeating top seed Aritha Weerasinghe in straight sets 6/2, 7/6
(4) in the final encounter at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Open
Tennis Championships. Shakir maintained a flawless record in the
tournament by beating N Nishangan and Chinthaka Shaveen in straight sets
during their previous meetings.
Meanwhile Khemali Herath won the under-18 girls singles championship
beating Nilushi Fernando in a closely contested match two sets 7/6(4),
7/5.
The Men’s and Women’s Open singles finals will be work out at the SSC
courts today evening. Amritha Muttiah and Roshenka Fernando will battle
for the Women’s Open title, while Irfan Hussain will meet T
Dineshkanthan in the Men’s Open final. Amritha beat Khemali Herath
6/2,7/6(2) in the semi finals and Roshenka Fernando out pointed Dinushki
Ranasinghe 7/5,6/4 in the other semi final.
Irfan Hussain qualified for the final beating Nishangan Nadaraja
6/3,6/1 in the semi finals while T Dineshkanthan stepped in to the final
as M A Shakir retired in the second set of their semi final match 7/5,
4/1 ret.
