Prisoners give up hunger strike

Prison Commissioner General Major General V R de Silva conducts discussions with prison inmates:

Most of the prison inmates in Welikada prison have given up their hunger strike, Prisons Department Senior Official Asoka Hapuarachchi told the Daily News yesterday. Prison Commissioner General Major General V R de Silva conducted a special discussion yesterday with the Welikada prison inmates who were on a hunger strike.

The Commissioner General explained matters and has agreed to look at the possibility of granting a general amnesty to them after studying the existing system. He has agreed to take corrective measures on the shortcomings with existing system with regard to those who were sentenced to life imprisonment or death, by submitting a report to the President through the Justice Ministry.

He also said that prison inmates in the Mahara prison were reported to have given up the protests yesterday.
