'Northern education in past, destroyed by incorrect political leadership'

Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda participating at a ceremony held to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Pungudutivu Kamalambigai Junior School which was held on May 5, 2011, said that under the guidance of incorrect political leadership, the education of the entire North had been completely destroyed.

Speaking further, the Minister said that this school had been one of the oldest schools in the islets and as no development had taken place so far, which was due to the war, stressed the necessity of commencing development to the school forthwith. Owing to the demand by children, parents and teachers, the Minister had promised to supply the school with electricity, erect a two storeyed building and also supply windows to the existing building.

He also said that he would make arrangements to take the children out on an educational tour during the school vacation.

"It's only through a good education that we could create a well-disciplined and law abiding society, therefore both the teachers and students concertedly should work together to achieve this objective," the Minister said.

Secretary to the Ministry of Local Government, Northern Provincial Council Vijayaluxmi Ramesh who chaired the meeting, said that the minister was tenaciously bound to the life of the islanders and had done a great deal for the development of education in the islets for which they were grateful to him.

Chief Priest of Nallur Kovil Kurukkal Somasundarampillai Zonal Director of Education Radhakrishna, Navy Commanding Officer of Pungudutivu and School Principal Nagarajah also participated at the ceremony
