Solid waste management project launched

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) launched a solid waste
management programme under the pilisaru project to help North Western
Province local authorities regularize solid waste management.
Speaking at its launching ceremony at Wennappuwa Pradeshiya Sabha
auditorium recently, Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said
, it is a duty of all to keep our environment clean and a major role has
to be played by the local authorities.
'It will enable to make a clean and healthier environment by giving
sustainable solutions to the solid waste problem, said the minister.
'Pilisaru national solid waste management project is providing
solutions for local government authorities to preserve a resource which
is marketable. Pilisaru has supported over 80 local government
authorities to find sustainable solutions for the solid waste problem,
CEA Chairman Charitha Herath said.
The CEA as the regulatory institute for environment in Sri Lanka, is
involved in solid waste management.
It plans and designs waste management projects for local authorities,
giving financial and technical support to them through the pilisaru
project and plastic waste management project.
Technical and financial support for solid waste management was
provided to some of the Pradeshiya Sabhas in the North Western Province
too.
In addition CEA has also taken measures to introduce solid waste
management to local authorities in Puttalam district.
