The Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WCCI) will implement
micro credit projects at regional level in a bid to increase women
participation in the socio-economic development.
The pilot project will be carried out at the Jaffna Women’s Chamber
shortly.
“We intend to increase women’s participation in the economic main
stream by providing funding and guidance for aspiring women to become
successful entrepreneurs. Our efforts will benefit the families and also
contribute in the country’s economic growth,” Women’s Chamber of
Commerce and Industries Chairperson Vidyani Hettigoda told Daily News
Business.
“The majority of the population consists of women. However, their
contribution is far less than ideal levels. This needs to be corrected
and to achieve desired levels creating awareness is essential,” she
said.
The economic benefits from self-employment should be key for more
women becoming entrepreneurs and they need stimulus packages such as
micro credit facilities as start-up assistance. the pilot project in
Jaffna will fuel women’s involvement in economic activities,” she said.
