Moratu Vidyalaya Star all-rounder Sanka Ramesh recorded the best all-round performance among the schools for the just concluded 2010/2011 inter-school under 19 cricket season with 1187 runs at an average of 51.6 and claiming 103 wickets in sixteen inter-school matches and undoubtedly he is the best all-round cricketer produced by Moratu Vidyalaya in their 76 year old cricket history.

Also he is the third schoolboy cricketer from the island so far to achieve this very rare double.

He commenced his cricket career at De Soysa Maha Vidyalaya Angulana, Moratuwa and his first cricket coaches were Sabu Weerasuriya and Jayalath Aponso. He joined Moratu Vidyalaya in the hope of persue his studies and cricket and thanks to their coach who himself an Old Vidyalian Prasanna Dissanayake for picking up this young lad’s talents and moulded him to be a fine all-rounder.

In addition Sanka Ramesh turned out for Singhalese Sports Club last year in the Under 23 Premier cricket tournament and excelled as an all-rounder. He claimed 29 wikcets and his best figures were with formidable Colombo Cricket Club with 6 for 47 and 4 for 40 a match bag of 10 for 47. Now he represents Old Moratu Vidyalian Sports Club in the tournaments conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket.

He bats right hand and bowls right arm leg Spin and currently in the Sri Lanka Schools Under 19 cricket pool.

He scored 215 runs against Zahira College Colombo and 129 runs against St. Sylvesters, Kandy and he ran short of batsmen against St. Benedicts College, Kotahena and was unbeaten on 84 runs. His best all-round performance came against more fancied and formidable St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa when he scored an elegant 100 runs in the first innings and 35 not out in the second essay and he became the first ever cricketer from Vidyalaya to notched up a century against their neighboring school St. Sebastians. He took a ten wicket haul in this match claiming six wickets and four wickets respectively.

Also he scored 40 and 58 runs versus St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya and against Asoka Vidyalaya, Colombo he missed a well deserved ton by six runs. He scored four fiftees and took four ten wicket hauls and eight five wicket hauls.

When contacted from ‘Daily News Sports’ he thanked his parents, coaches the Principal Lakshman de Silva, S Geeganage the Master in charge the Present Coach Prasanna Dissanayake, Members of the S S C and Old Moratu Vidyalalian Sports Club and all others who supported him to come up the ladder.

Sanka Ramesh got a fine exposure during his schools first ever overseas cricket tour to Hyderabad in early this year.
