Suspect nabbed with heroin haul

Wellawatta Police yesterday arrested a suspect with 240 packets of heroin brown sugar worth Rs 60,000. The weight of the haul was about 5,000 mgs.

The suspect was arrested in Menikwala junction on a tip-off, said Wellawatta Police OIC CI Samarakoon. The suspect aged 39 was a resident of Kalubowila- Dehiwala area. Samarakoon said that five cases were pending against him in the Colombo High Court. Four cases among them were for looting and one case was related to heroin.

He was previously employed as a driver in the Army. The police said that he had been involved in the transportation of drugs from Kohuwala to Piliyandala. The police said that the suspect was connected to a network of drug dealers and was released on bail at previous occasions. Samarakoon said further investigations would be carried out to nab the sub and main dealers. The suspect was nabbed by a police team including PCs Jayathilake, Premathilake and Nalinda.
