Fined for violating consumer rights

Galle District Secretariat Consumer Affairs Authority has collected over Rs 122,500 as court fines from traders for violating consumer rights from raids carried out in the district.

Raids were carried out in Elpitiya, Uragaha, Hikkaduwa, Ahangama, Habaraduwa, Bentota, Yakkalamulla, Galle, Ambalangoda and several other sub towns and weekly fairs.

Thirty six raids were conducted in April 2011.

Traders were prosecuted on charges of selling rice over the set prices, non-display of price lists and breach of orders issued by the Consumer Affairs Authority.

Raids were conducted upon instructions by the Galle District Secretary W Sakalasuriya.
