CHILDREN
Amadahara Sadaham Vesak Zone
Dear children,
We will be commemorating the 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthi this year
with countrywide events.
The area from the Gangaramaya to Temple Trees has been declared a
Vesak Zone. The Bauddhalokha Vesak Kalapaya will also be held.
The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL) will establish the
Amadahara to mark the 2600th Sambuddhatva Jayanthi.
The ANCL Amadahara Sadaham Vesak Zone has been held on a grand scale
for the past nine years has drawn large crowds.
Children, I am sure most of you would have visited the Lake House
Amadahara Sadaham Zone in the past years while Vesak sightseeing.
The Vesak lantern competition, Bhakthi Gee recital, puppet show and
Dansals are big attractions.
Make sure to visit the Amadahara Sadaham Vesak Zone and be a part of
the Sambuddhatva Jayanthi which has to be the most important event in
our calendar.
Bye for now. Happy Vesak.

The Dhammapada
The Hypocritical Cat!
Read a book with me
Hi friends,
Have you ever thought about how much we Sri Lankans are influenced by
our neighbouring country India? India has always been playing a major
role in making Sri Lanka what it is. In this process, Indian literature
has always been playing a very important role too.
Today we’re going to read an English translation of a very popular
collection of Indian tales: The Panchtantra. Can you guess what
Panchtantra means? There is a series of Panchtantra books with different
stories in each of them. All these stories pass on some kind of message,
a moral to the readers. We call this type of literature, where the main
purpose of writing seems to be to pass on some moral value to the
readers, didactic literature.
Have you come across this term before?
There are four interesting stories in the book The Hypocritical Cat
published by Dreamland Publications: The Hypocritical Cat, The Wicked
Snake, Union is Strength and the Merciful Brahman. When you read these
stories, you will realize that we have similar folk tales in Sri Lankan
literature and in literatures of various other societies as well.
This explains how we are influenced and enriched by each other.
The moral of the story of The Hypocritical Cat is ‘an evil person
seldom says good-bye to his her evil nature. He or she may pretend to be
pious to serve a selfish end. Having served this end he or she again
acts in an evil manner.
So, you must beware of such hypocrites’. Do you agree with this
moral? Try to find the other morals given in these stories and see how
far you can agree with them.
Do you think you want to accept, reject or modify them?
Have a great Panchtantra time!
See you next week - Gayathri
Hug of friendship
At times we want someone,
Out of the usual company.
Someone special,
Who knows to thrill you simply;
Who have their own charm,
Who means you no harm.....
Someone who just stay,
Stay close to you;
To give a cuddly hug,
And say....,
“You are the best, next to carrot;
To play with,
And to be with”.
Making you feel like,
Sitting on soft grass.
Enjoying the flowers dance.
Thinking......
Of all things I’ve got,
You are the most soft,
And if I die before you do.....
I’ll go to heaven and wait for you!
