Pallekelle stadium pavilion to be named 'Lakshman Kiriella Pavilion'
Remember former Minister of Tourism & Sports "Lakshman Kiriella who
initiated the construction of the Pallekele Cricket Stadium? Well he is
extremely interested in the happenings on cricket, especially where Sri
Lanka is concerned.

A true sports lover, of the highest calibre he contributed immensely
towards the development of sports when he was the man in charge of
sports. Recently A resolution was tabled at the last Kandy Municipal
Council monthly meeting held on April 28, 2011 to name the Pallekelle
Cricket Stadium Pavilion as "Lakshman Kiriella Pavilion".
The motion was unanimously passed in appreciation of the good work
done by him to commence this project.
The Council duly supported this motion and the Council will make a
request in writing to the Sri Lanka Cricket to move in this matter.
It was Lakshman Kiriella as Minster of Tourism and Sports who
initiated the Pallekelle Stadium project. The first discussion was
chaired by him on December 19, 2000 at the Tourism Ministry premises
with officials of the BOI and Sri Lanka Cricket regarding the venue at
the Pallekelle High Tech International Training Centre, to make way for
a cricket stadium and sports complex with a 99 years lease agreement.
The Minister had requested the BOI and Sri Lanka Cricket to make
Pallekele an eco-friendly stadium in keeping with the panoramic beauty
of the Dumbara Valley.
It was Lakshman Kiriella who requested BOI chairman to release this
land for a International cricket Ground, during his sports ministership.
Lakshman Kiriella, thanked the present government of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa for doing an excellent job and he said that today this
stadium can be rated as one of the best in Asia. HM |
