Airmen and women judo champions

H S K Hapuarachchi of Sri Lanka Police clinched the men's open title
at the Judo Championship at the Nawalapitiya Town hall recently. Sri
Lanka Judo Association (SLJA) and Upcountry Lions Sports Club jointly
conducted the tournament as the first event after the SLJA's election.

The two day tournament has attracted nearly 600 judokas who competed
in 14 weight categories. The newly elected SLJA president Udaya
Wickremasinghe said that the tournament has been helpful to identify
contenders for the international competitions, including South Asian
Games.
SL Air Force bagged the men's team championship collecting 46 points
while SL Army became the first runner up with 27 points keeping the
police team in third place, a point behind them.
Air Force did well to win the women's team shield as well to obtained
43 points. Jinarajini Sports Club, Gampola scored 15 points as first
runner up while Police and Bahuwans Sports Club shared the third place
with 4 points in the women's event.
Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage was the chief guest at the
award ceremony and gave away the trophies. The sports Director General
Ranjini Jayakody was also present at the prize giving.
