The main problem faced by the public in Panadura is the storm water
problem, Panadura Urban Council Chairman Nandana Gunatilleke said.
Speaking at the council's inaugural meeting, he said during a heavy
shower, Galle Road and other roads in the area go under water because
there is no irrigation scheme in operation.
All drains are obstructed in various places. Most roads in Panadura
were renovated by the Western Province Provincial Council last year but
there are no drains, the chairman said.
Gunatilleke obtained councillors views to establish a unit to repair
roads as the Council could save funds without giving the contract to
private contractors to repair roads.
UNP councillor and Opposition Leader Deepthi Abeywickama assured
support to the council to solve the rate payers problems.
Mahes Fernando said pavement hawkers face difficulties in D S
Senanayaka Mawatha, Panadura as they had been evacuated by the police.
"There are 42 empty stalls inside the Panadura Public Market and the
pavement hawkers should be given those stalls," he said. |
