St Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya scored their third successive win
for the season when they trounced Dharmaraja College by 54 points (7
goals, 1 try) to 5 (1 try) in their schools Under-19 Division One rugby
tournament match played at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy yesterday. At
half time, the Peterites led 26-0.
Peterites displayed a flair for running with the ball and the Rajans
paid the penalty by not tackling their opponents. The winners were in
full control of the game right from the kick off except briefly after
the turn around.
Peterites opened scoring in the 7th minute of the game when scrum
half Rizwan Meedin went through a gap in the opponents’ defence to touch
down under the post and added the extra points himself.
Three minutes later skipper and full back Banuka Nanayakkara joined
the three quarters to score mid left and Meedin added the extra points.
After a lull in scoring for about 20 minutes the Peterites found the
rhythm when the hard running centre Danushka Ranjan pierced the defence
to score by right corner flag which went unconverted.
A minute before the short blast winger Krishan Anthony scored off a
three quarter movement and Meedin added the extra points for the Petes
to lead 26-0 at lemons.
After the short interval the Rajans were able to stop their opponents
from piling up their total through some bruising tackling but this
lasted only 15 minutes and the Peterites countered this by moving the
ball around and this paid dividends.
Rajans did their only scoring of the match when skipper and flanker
Chanaka Jayasundera powered his way to score mid-right. From here
onwards it was Peterites as they mounted pressure on their opponents’
defence to pile up points.
Two more tries by centre Danushka Ranjan which were goalled by Rizwan
Meedin and stand off Dulaj Perera saw them move upto 40-5.
During the dying stages of the game No 8 Isuru Alwis and stand off
Dulaj Perera scored tries and Dulaj Perera added the extra points.
