Hotel school training

The Kavantissa Vocational Training Centre at Tissamaharama which is
affiliated to the Tissamaharamaya Raja Maha Viharaya has launched a
hotel school training programme with the sponsorship of Jet Wing Chain
of Hotels.
The co-sponsors of the course are CARE International and the World
University Service of Canada (WUSC).
It is a one year course for school leavers and unemployed youth. The
course will be conducted free of charge. After training the National and
Internation standard National Vocational (NV) qualification will be
awarded to the trainees.
Fines for drunk drivers

Gampaha Additional Magistrate Indika Attanayake imposed a fine of Rs
8000 each on five persons who pleaded guilty to the charges of driving
vehicles without driving licences and under the influence of alcohol.
The accused were T R A Premaratne, Upul Saliya, D Susantha, Upali
Saman and Thusitha Gunawardena of Ganemulla. Ganemulla Police
prosecuted.
Bristol Street renamed Sir Razik Fareed Mawatha
Bristol Street in Fort will be officially renamed "Sir Razik Fareed
Mawatha" by Prime Minister D M Jayaratne on May 2, 2011. The Prime
Minister will address the commemorative meeting at the premises of the
Moors' Islamic Cultural Home (MICH) after the ceremonial renaming of the
street.
This meeting will be presided by Alhaj Omar Kamil, President MICH and
the Special Commissioner, Colombo. Sir Razik Fareed a statesman,
politician, diplomat and a great philanthropist was the Founder
President of the Moors' Islamic Cultural Home, a premier Islamic
organization since its inception in 1944. The headquarters of the MICH
is located in this street.
Help Heshani
Heshani Navodya Nethrangali, 9, suffers hearing loss in both ears.
Specialist doctor H M S B Ethulgama said that she could be cured by
surgery.
The surgery has been planned at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Special
Children's Hospital in Peradeniya. Hearing aid will cost Rs 2.4 million.
The child's father is a cab driver and her mother is recovering from
a heart operation.
They seek public help for the operation. Contributions can be sent to

Unidentified sea creature found in Kalpitiya

An unidentified sea creature was found in Kalpitiya, Mottuarama
island, It was sent to the National Aquatic Resources Research and
Development Agency (NARA) yesterday.
NARA officers and scientists will hold DNA tests. This creature was
found about a week ago. NARA officials said that they assume it is a
marine mammal.
Pirith ceremony
An all night Pirith chanting has been organized by the Sri Lanka
Investment Board to coincide with the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi
festival.
This Pirith chanting organized by the Investment Services Department
of the Sri Lanka Investment Board will be held at 8 p.m. on May 6 at No.
14, Sir Baron Jayathilake Mawatha in the premises of the Investment
Board.
Sangika Dana, book launch
The Sri Lanka Ex Servicemen's Association and Sri Lanka
Ex-servicemen's Institute will celebrate the 2600 th Sambuddhatva
Jayanthi with a Dharma Desana on May 3 at 5pm and a Sangika Dana on May
4 to 26 monks.
After the Dana, a book titled The Life Of the Buddha through the eyes
of a philatelist with illustrations of stamps and proposed stamps will
be launched at the Sri Lanka Ex-servicemens Institute headquarters,
Bristol Street, Colombo.
Navy passing out parade

The first batch of Sri Lanka Navy personnel trained at the Navy
Recruit training Camp at Sampur will pass out today.
Six hundred and fifty one sailors will pass out today. The ceremony
will commence at 8.30am with the participation of Director General
Logistics Rear Admiral C D S Molligoda as the chief guest.
Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasooriya said that this area,
where this training camp is located, was under LTTE control earlier.
The Naval Recruit Training Camp at Sampur was established after the
elimination of terrorism.
AGM
The 23rd AGM of the Association of Agents of Agency Post Offices will
be held at the Postal Department Auditorium at D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha
Colombo today at 8 a.m. Postal Services Ministry Secretary Hemasiri
Fernando and Post Master General K.B. Dissanayake will be the Chief
Guests.
New Year festival
A New Year festival organized by the National Crafts Councils
Handicrafts marketing and Production village will be held at the Jana
Kala Kendra Complex Battaramulla on May 2 from 9 a.m. Council's Chairman
Dr. Buddhi Keerthisena will be the chief guest. The festival will
conclude with a "Peduru Party".

release invited members of all LSSP organizations to participate in the
LSSP May Day rally at 1 p.m.
The LSSP rally is due to commence from the N M Perera statue in

The second annual General Meeting of Nalanda '81 group will be held
at 7.00 p.m at Rainbow Ballroom of the Grand Oriental Hotel Colombo.
Nalanda College past principals Dharma Gunasinghe will be the chief
guest while Gunapala Wickramaratne will be the guest of honour.
Principal Ranjith Jayasundara and Deputy Principal Chintha Ariyasena
will also participate. .
The group get-together will follow the annual general meeting.

Water interruption in Negombo
There will be an interruption to water supply to Negombo Urban
Council, Duwa Pitipana, Katunayake Investment Zone and Sri Lanka Air
Force, Katunayake on the following days due to repairs in the Negambo
Water Supply System, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board
announced yesterday. May 3 from 7am to 7pm, May 5 from 7am to 7am the
