A remote village in the North Central Province is being developed as
a sustainable village with all facilities on the initiative of
Provincial Co-operatives Minister H B Semasinghe. The project was
launched to mark the installation of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s
second term of office.
The village known as Suhadagama has launched its own women’s
organisation titled Dehemi Nivahana - Apegama-Divi Neguma to promote
cultivation of home gardens. Nearly 310 families are living in this
village and each dwelling has a home garden where 20 types of vegetables
are cultivated for their sustenance.
They also prepare their carbonic manure for cultivations and
pesticides using medicinal herbs. Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa
Abeywardena has allocated Rs 93,000 for the provision of locally
produced seeds as planting material for the villagers. The residents are
also taught on measures to keep their homes and kitchens in an orderly
manner while programmes have been implemented to promote educational
activities of the children. |
