Lightning claims 12 this month

January to April: 19 deaths:

Lightning killed 12 people this month while 19 deaths were reported from January to April this year due to lightning. Thirty three deaths due to lightning were reported last year, Meteorology Department statistics revealed.

The Meteorology Department urged the public to take action to minimize damages caused in lightning. Lightning is common in Sri Lanka during April. This situation will change from May, a spokesman said.

The Meteorology Department also forecasted thunder showers in the next two days. "

Inter-monsoon showers are common in the afternoons and evenings during March to April.

Thunder showers develop in the country with the activation of the Inter Tropical Conversion Zone, said Meteorology Department Meteorologist in-charge D A Jayasinghearachchi.

This situation will be changed after May 15 with the beginning of the South West monsoon, he said.

The Meteorology Department advised the public to avoid using telephones, electrical items and iron material.

People should not seek shelter under isolated trees and walk in open areas.
