Korea helps education improvement
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Education
Ministry held a project coordination meeting at the Education Ministry
recently for monitoring the progress and future work schedule of the
Project for "Rehabilitation of eight schools in Eastern Province. KOICA
Resident Representative and Education Ministry officials participated.
The conflict in the Eastern Province made a large number of schools
devastated and the people leave for other region. With the conflict
ending in 2009, the Province needed to rehabilitate schools and houses
for the people and children to return to their communities. The
Education Ministry and Regional Education Offices made an action plan to
rehabilitate schools and provide facilities for the purpose.
The KOICA is implementing the project to share Korea's experience and
know-how on the education sector's development with Sri Lanka. This two
million dollar budget project will improve the education environment and
facilitate IDPs resettlement in the region through building classrooms
and auxiliary facilities and provision of classroom furniture in four
schools in Ampara and four in Batticaloa.
