The fear of another flood threat has diminished following the
decrease of heavy rain fall experienced in Anuradhapura district during
last few days.
However the special feature is that for the third occasion majority
of the reservoirs and tanks in Anuradhapura district have started
overflowing.
Anuradhapura district Irrigation Director Wasantha Bandara
Palugaswewa told the Daily News that tanks such as Nuwarawewa, Tisawewa,
Wahalkada and Mahawilachchiya along with Basawakkulama were spilling
apart from a large number of medium and smallscale tanks in Anuradhapura
district.
"At Wahalkada it spills one feet above the spilling level, Tisawewa
seven inches, Nuwarawewa 7 inches and Mahawilachchiya by 1 feet, 7
inches. We have opened seven radial gates of Rajangane while keeping the
level one and a half feet below the spill level in view of the opening
of two gates at Kalawewa reservoir. At Nachchaduwa only two inches to
reach the spill level," Palugaswewa revealed further.
He said to avoid any disaster if rains started again the farmers
residing in downstream of major tanks have been cautioned to be on alert
regarding the water level of the irrigational canals. |
