Sambandan’s triumphalism
I was reminded then of my efforts, as Head of
the Peace Secretariat, to meet Sambandan, as discussed with the
President, shortly after the defeat of the LTTE. Sambandan, while
never refusing outright, kept saying he was too busy, because he had
to meet with several foreign dignitaries. Clearly, he felt that
peace was better achieved by requesting foreign pressure rather than
by discussions with mandated Sri Lankans.

the disaster zones. A particular story of a 9-year-old boy, who lost
his parents and queuing up in a long food line, was fascinating. A
Policeman approaching the boy had offered part of his food ration
saying: “When it comes to your turn, they might run out of food. So
here’s my portion. I already ate. Why don’t you eat it?”
