Thunder showers will be fairly widespread over the island today,
Meteorological Department duty forecaster Damayanthi Indiketihewage told
the Daily News yesterday.
She said that thunder showers will occur over the island during the
afternoon and night. Showers or thunder showers will occur in the
Western and Southern provinces in the morning while fairly heavy falls
are likely at some places, she said.
Indiketihewage noted that the disturbance in the inter tropical
convergence zone where winds from Northern and Southern hemispheres come
together, is affecting the weather over the island.
The department also requested the public to take adequate precautions
to avoid lightening accidents. About 11 deaths have been reported
following lightening incidents so far. The country will experience
fairly strong winds today and the speed of the wind in the Southwestern
and Southern seas will be around 20 to 40 kilometres per hour, she said.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said that no flood
threat is reported in the country so far. It also requested people
living in landslide prone areas to be cautious. The DMC spokesman said
that the centre will take prompt action if an emergency situation
develops in the country.
Meanwhile, the Police requested from the public to be vigilant and
cautious when driving vehicles under rainy conditions to prevent road
accidents. |
