The Sri Lanka Agonshu Friendship Foundation held a Bodhi pooja at the Kotte Raja Maha Viharaya on Wednesday to invoke blessings on the Japanese people affected by the recent earthquake, tsunami and the threat of radiation. Here the Viharadhipati Ven Aluthnuwara Anuruddha Thera conducting the pinkama in the presence of a large gathering. Alleged robbers netted

Biyagama police nabbed three suspects who were involved in seven armed robberies and recovered Rs 500,000 worth stolen goods including jewellery and four mobile phones.

The suspects were produced before Gampaha Magistrate Courts and remanded until April 6.


Gallery with a difference

The Thuru Sevena Art Gallery is a unique gallery in Sri Lanka. Its mission is to conserve temple paintings and recreate disfigured ancient temple paintings and display in the art gallery. Its vision is also to secure ancient traditional art styles and work for the Buddha Sasana's benefit.

Members of the Thuru Sevena Art Gallery which had seen several articles in the Daily News of disfiguring paintings had recreated the paintings on canvas. The gallery at present has 250 recreated selected disfigured paintings on canvas.

The Art Gallery is at Dewata Road, Paragastota. Its chief advisor is Ven Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera, advisor to the President.


Free seminar

The Sri Lanka Institute of Printing under the Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry has organized a free workshop style seminar in Graphic Design and Multimedia Education. The seminar will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2011 from 8.30 am to 2.30 pm at the institute premises.

Thera off to S Korea

Amugoda Jayasumanarama ancient temple incumbent, Thai-Sri Lanka Friendship and Cultural Organization Secretary and Deputy Chief Sangha Nayaka of Eknaligoda Chapter of Sri Saddharmawansha Maha Nikaya ven Amugoda Somananda Nayaka Maha Thera left for South Korea recently to participate in a relics enshrining ceremony and Vesak festivals to be held at Yaksha Sha Temple in Seoul, South Korea.


Chain snatchers arrested

Police arrested two members of a robber gang travelling on motor bike at Hingurakgoda Monday. They are said to have been involved in many cases of gold chain snatching in the area.

The Hingurakgoda town was said to have been rocked with incidents of gold -chain snatching by this gang over the past few months, police said.

The two suspects were absconding arrest . Police took them into custody along with their motorbikes. The gang operates on at least six motorbikes, police said.

Hingurakgoda police are investigating.


Mice at play when cats are away

Food sellers in Matara are allegedly selling food not suitable for consumption after 4.30pm when public health inspectors returns home after duty.

Residents said in the absence of officials at night stale and rotten food kept in refrigerators for days are sold. They had lodged complaints with regard to this and health officials are continuing raids until 10 pm.

The health officers nabbed 40 food sellers for selling stale and unhygienic food.
