Nightingales turn Samaritans

The Public Service United Nurses' Union has commenced a social welfare project under the guidance of its Chairman Ven Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera setting a good example for other trade unions.

The union is now providing assistance to flood affected schools in difficult areas, Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, launching the program the union provided school equipment, musical instruments, sanitary facilities and many more items worth over Rs one million to Velikanda Maha Vidyalaya in the Polonnaruwa district recently.

Necessary funds are to be provided by the union members and from donors. There are over 800 students in the school. A fund was established to provide scholarships to the needy students.

The union has already identified 95 schools to provide school equipment, musical instruments and other infrastructure facilities.

The program is to be expanded to the other parts of the country soon to cover schools that need help in difficult areas, he said.
