Ranga and Ruvini clinch a double each

Ranga Niroshana and Ruvini Ekanayake of John Keells won a double each at Novices Badminton Championship 2011, concluded at S Thomas Indoor Sports Complex on Sunday. Ranga defeated Lahiru Kodithuwakku (Nations Trust Bank) in the men’s single final by 2-1 while Ruvini had the better of Umayangani Jayawaratne (Suntel LTD) 2-0 in the women’s singles final. They both overcame Lahiru and Umayangani by 2-0 to become the mixed double champions.

The event was organzied by Mercantile Badminton Association (MBA) to give an opportunity to novice shuttlers who are permanent employees of all mercantile sector establishments affiliated to the MBA, to set up into the exciting game of badminton. The games were conducted on a knock-out basis in men’s and women’s singles and doubles, men’s and women’s veterans singles and doubles over 40 and 35 respectively, master’s singles and doubles over 50 and mixed doubles event categories. This year Dulux and AVI sponsored the tournament.

Adrian De Lima (St Regis International Pvt Ltd) got the better of T Ramrajan (Greenfield Bio Plantation Pvt Ltd) to win the Masters Championship while men’s veterans single was won by P Abeysundera (Seylan Bank Pvt Ltd) when he defeated Naveen Weerasena (Finlays Colombo Plc).

Anura Fonseka and D P H Ranjith (High Tec Marine Engineering Pvt Ltd) cruised to victory to clinch men’s veterans doubles by beating Adrian De Lima (St. Regis International Pvt Ltd) and Andrew Gunaratne (John Keells Group).

Masters Singles

Adrian De Lima (St Regis International Pvt Ltd) beat T Ramrajan (Greenfield Bio Plantation Pvt Ltd) 21/15, 21/18.

Mens Veterans Singles

P Abeysundera (Seylan Bank Plc) beat Naveen Weerasena (Finlays Colombo Plc) 17/21, 21/12, 21/11.

Men’s Veterans Doubles

Anura Fonseka and D P H Ranjith (High Tech Marine Engineering Pvt Ltd) beat Adiran De Lima (St Regis International Pvt Ltd)

Andrew Gunaratne (John Keells Group) 21/12, 21/18.

Men’s Singles

Ruvini Ekanayake (John Keells Group) beat Umayangani Jayarathne (Suntel Ltd) 21/14, 21/12

Women’s doubles

Rashika Weerasena and Shivanthi Kottege (John Keells Group, beat Ruvini Ekanayake and Vishadini Fernando (John Keells Group) 21/17, 21/19.

Mixed Doubles

Ranga Niroshana and Ruvini Ekanayake (John Keells Group) beat Lahiru Kodithuwakku (Nation Trust Bank Plc), Umayangani Jayarathna (Suntel Ltd) 21/10, 21/15.
