Closed schools re-opened

The Kegalle Udampa Siyambalapitiya Vidyalaya which was closed for the
past eleven years, was reopened and affiliated with the Kegalle Swarna
Jayanthi Maha Vidyalaya as a primary school by Chief Minister of
Sabaragamuwa, Maheepala Herath.
The opening ceremony took place on March, 11 and 38 children were
enrolled to Grade 1. The Meepitiya Vidyalaya, another closed school was
reopened and was affiliated to the Kegalle St. Mary’s Maha Vidyalaya as
a primary school.
Housemaid dies in Lebanon
A Sri Lankan housemaid (29) has died after falling from a fourth
floor of a building belonging to a job agency in Lebanon yesterday.
Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) sources said the victim
was identified as a resident in Gampaha and she has gone to Lebanon in
January. The SLFEB has requested a full report on the death.
Investigations are underway to identify the cause of the death.

Housing Conference
Atapattu Bandara
National Housing Conference 2011 under the theme of Samata Sevana -
Jana Sevana will be held on March 22 and 23 at the Sri Lanka Foundation
Institute. The conference will be held in collaboration with the United
Nation’s Habitat program and Construction, Engineering, Housing and
Common Amenities Ministry.
Minister Wimal Weerawansa will open the conference. The objective of
the conference is to provide affordable quality houses for all citizens
as an achievement of a Millennium Development Goal (MDG).
Woman succumbs
A 65 year old woman pedestrian was knocked down by a CTB bus from
Mahawa to Daladagama succumbed to her injuries at the Mahawa hospital
Sunday.
The deceased was identified as H M Bandara Menika of Aluth Herathgama,
Galgamuwa. The alleged bus driver taken into policy custody was due to
be produced in court yesterday. Mahawa Police is investigating.
New Official Language chief
Janaka Chandana Ranepura, a Grade one SLAS officer has been appointed
Commissioner of Official Languages with effect from March 21, 2011.
He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of former Commissioner
Senarath Gunasena.
A graduate of the Colombo University Ranepura joined the SLAS in 1990
and served in various capacities in the Government sector.

Sampath Wilson was admitted to SOS Children’s Village at Piliyandala
in 1981.
He was 3 years old at the time. He is presently in need of a live
kidney transplant for survival as recommended by Dr A L M Nazar
(consultant nephrologist) because Sampath is in end stage kidney
failure.

Research conference
The Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka (RASSL) is holding its 4th
annual Research Conference on March 25 and 26, 2011 at the Mahaweli
Centre, No 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7. It is the largest
national conference in social sciences and the humanities. This year’s
Research Conference in addition to other fields, is the launching of the
1st “Philosophy Studies Conference” in the country and hosting the third
