Nuwara-Eliya BOPFs continue to appreciate

John Keells Tea Market Report:

Last week’s 0.98 mkgs of Ex Estate teas on offer met with fair demand. A few select Best Western High Grown BOPs sold well, whilst the others were firm to irregularly dearer.

BOPF on average appreciated Rs 5 to Rs 10. Nuwara Eliya BOPs continued to appreciate substantially by Rs 20 to Rs 30, while BOPFs were irregularly dearer.

Uva BOPs too were irregular, whilst the BOPFs were mostly firm. Low Grown CTC PF1s were Rs 15 to Rs 20 dearer, whilst the High and Medium types were firm to marginally easier on average.

Russia was selective, whilst the tea bag sector lent good support. UK, Japan and Continental buyers were fairly active.

The 3.1 mkg of Low Growns that were on offer this week met with fair demand, however the price levels were lower to the previous week. In the leafy category, BOP1 and OP1 declined Rs 10 to Rs 20 whilst the Pekoe grades too shed by a similar margin.

In the Small Leaf category, FBOP and FF1s shed Rs 10 to Rs 20, whilst the Tippy varieties declined on last levels.

The Iranian buyers continued to be selective.

Western Teas

Select Best BOPs advanced Rs 10 following special inquiry, other good BOPs too gained Rs 10 to Rs 15 on average, Below Best sorts were firm to Rs 5 dearer, plainer types were irregular.

Select Best BOPFs advanced Rs 5 to Rs 10 and more following quality, other good invoices gained Rs 10, Below Best sorts advanced Rs 5 to Rs 10 and more as the sale progressed, plainer varieties gained Rs 5 to Rs 10 on average. Medium BOPs declined Rs 5 to Rs 10 and more following quality. BOPFs advanced Rs 5 to Rs 10.

Nuwara Eliya Teas

BOPs advanced Rs 20 to Rs 30, whilst BOPFs gained Rs 5 to Rs 10.

Uva Teas

Brighter BOP/BOPFs declined Rs 10 to Rs 15. Other BOPs advanced Rs 5, whilst BOPFs were firm. Uda Pussellawa BOPs advanced Rs 15 to Rs 20, whilst BOPFs gained Rs 5 to Rs 10 on average.

CTC Teas

Select Best Low Grown PF1s advanced Rs 20, others gained Rs 10 to Rs 15 and more. BP1s advanced Rs 5 to Rs 10. High and Medium PF1s were marginally easier, BP1s gained Rs 5.

Low Growns

Lower demand. Select Best OP1s eased Rs 10 to Rs 20, the Best types maintained last levels, Below Best and poor sorts were irregularly lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10. Select Best BOP1s were firm to Rs 5 to Rs 10 dearer at times, however the Best types declined Rs 10 to Rs 15 and more, Below Best and poor sorts were mainly firm. Select Best OPs were irregularly dearer by Rs 5 to Rs 10, however the balance eased Rs 10 to Rs 15. Select Best OPAs were firm on last levels, balance tended lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15. Select Best Pekoes were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 20, Best and Below Best types were irregularly lower by Rs 5 to Rs 10, poor types too were lower by a similar margin.

Shotty Pekoe1s shed Rs 10 to Rs 20, Below Best and poor sorts were firm to Rs 5 to Rs 10 lower. Good demand for Tippy teas but prices declined on last week’s levels. Select Best BOP and BOP. SPs were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg, Best types were firm, Below Best and poorer sorts shed Rs 5 to Rs 10. Select Best and Best FBOP and FBOPF1s were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 20, Below Best and poorer types too shed Rs 10 to Rs 15. Select Best Tippy varieties declined on last levels, Best types too were barely steady, poorer sorts too were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15.

Off Grades

Select Best and Best liquoring Fngs1s depreciated Rs 10, Below Best and poorer sorts were lower by Rs 10 to Rs 15. Select Best and Best BMs depreciated Rs 10, Below Best and poorer sorts appreciated Rs 10 to Rs 15. All BPs were dearer by Rs 20. All Low Grown Fngs met with good demand and appreciated Rs 15. Select Best BOP1As along with the Best declined Rs 10 to Rs 15, whilst Below Best too shed by Rs 10 and more at times, balance were firm to easier by Rs 5.

Dust

Select Best Dust1s appreciated Rs 5 to Rs 10, whilst Best and Below Best types declined Rs 10 to Rs 15 and more towards the latter part of the sale, poorer sorts declined further. Clean secondaries appreciated Rs 10 to Rs 15, whilst balance gained Rs 15 to Rs 20. Best Low Grown Dust/Dust1s gained Rs 10 to Rs 15, whilst the balance too gained Rs 15 to Rs 20.
