'Sri Lankans treat women better'

Sri Lanka has accomplished more than most developing countries in providing equal opportunities for women, External Affairs Deputy Minister Neomal Perera said.

The Deputy Minister addressing the International Women's Day celebrations at the External Affairs Ministry yesterday said Sri Lankan women enjoy many rights including the right to vote, choice of education, when to have children.

"The Sri Lankan society has shown the world that women can hold powerful positions.

This is evident because women have equal opportunities and they take an active part in economic and political fields. The number of seats held in Parliament by women is also increasing," he added.

"We must recognize the contribution Sri Lankan women make towards the country's economy by bringing in vast amounts of foreign earnings, after toiling as maids and other workers in Middle Eastern countries," the Deputy Minister said.

Colombo University lecturer Prof Kusuma Karunarathne participating as the guest speaker said that as Sri Lankan women, all of us should lead lives with ethical behaviour.

Ministry Seva Vanitha Unit Chairperson Savithri Peris, Deputy Chairperson and Private Secretary to the Deputy Minister Krishanthi Perera, High Commissioners and Ambassadors also participated.
