Unit to curb human-elephant conflict

Wildlife Department Director General Chandrawansa Pathirage said the Department will appoint a special unit to minimize the human- elephant conflict in villages.

The Director General said the numbers of special units would increase to 14 with this unit.

These elephant control units have been set up in the wildlife zones in the country.

A large number of wild elephants have been killed by villagers in recent past, villagers are also facing pathetic situations.

He said a unit consists of 25 officials.

The Police, Divisional Secretariat and Agrarian organizations will coordinate the units.

The Director said the unit would establish a hotline to accept complaints.
