Representatives of Dedicated Economic Centres (DECs) in the island,
gathered at Dambulla to discuss their grievances at a press conference
held at Dambulla Sun Tray Hotel recently.
Dambulla Govi Sangamaya Chairman R B Herath said that the Dambulla
Dedicated Economic Centre had gained international fame as a commercial
hub.
He alleged that there was unnecessary political intervention into the
activities of this centre.
As a result, the Ministry has taken steps to take over the office
premises as well as the agriculture service centre.
At the beginning, lands were allocated by the management.
Since of late, the Ministry was adamant to change this system.
Accordingly, a new plastic container system has been introduced by
the Ministry to regularize the packing methods of vegetable, which ended
up a failure. This situation has created an unhealthy atmosphere among
the farmers and businessmen.
To rectify this situation the Ministry should have discussions with
the farmers and businessmen, Where a fair solution could be found or
else all activities would be held up.
The President of Dambulla Welanda Sangamaya A Dayanandasiri said that
the action taken by the Ministry regarding the Dedicated Economic Centre
was not fair and all economic centres in the country should unite to
face this threat.
