Over 500 Indians evacuated from Libya
India: India has evacuated hundreds of its nationals from crisis-hit
Libya as thousands of Libyan protesters are moving toward the capital
city, Tripoli. The first batch of 291 people aboard an Air India flight
from Tripoli landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New
Delhi late Saturday, Hindi language NDTV news channel reported.
A second Air India flight with 237 Indians from chaos-stricken Libya
landed early Sunday at the same airport. The UN Security Council (UNSC)
Saturday imposed sanctions on Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi and members
of his inner circle and referred Gaddafi to the International Criminal
Court.
The 68-year-old Gaddafi, nine members of his family, and six other
members of his clique will now face international travel bans. Any
assets belonging to Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam, and four other
family members will also be frozen. The UNSC unanimously ordered an arms
embargo on the Gaddafi regime and an investigation into the ongoing
bloodshed.
Gaddafi and four of his sons, Saif al-Islam, al-Saadi, al-Mutassim,
and Khamis, are reportedly in the Bab al-Azizia military barracks,
located west of Tripoli, and fighting against the pro-democracy
protesters. Libyan security forces have reportedly killed over 1,000
people during the recent demonstrations against Gaddafi’s four decades
of repressive rule. But Libya is bracing for more violence as thousands
of pro-democracy protesters, seeking the ouster of the Gaddafi regime,
are moving toward the capital.
