Sand miners to face the musicAnuradhapura District Secretary H M K Herath told the police to take into custody persons mining sand from the Lunu Oya, Panikkam Ela and Kala Oya in the Rajangana Project. Addressing the District Environment Committee meeting yesterday, he pointed out that mining sand from these places affects the environment. Rajangana Divisional Secretary K M Gamini Senaratne said sand miners are causing severe damages to the environment although millions of rupees were spent to modernize canals and irrigation work. Eye care centres coming up in remote areasThe International Centre for Eye Care Education (ICEE) has granted Rs 684,000 to set up four centres for eye care in remote areas. The four centres are to be established at Hambantota, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Moneragala districts. Vision 2020 office is taking action to set up these centres. The Memorandum of Understanding in this regard was signed by Additional Secretary Dr Palitha Maheepala and ICEE Sri Lanka Representative Anita Munasinghe at the Health Ministry recently. Eye surgeon Dr M Ahmed was also present. The Health Ministry Vision 2020 office has already taken measures to start a campaign to identify children with poor eye sight. Four cannabis distributors nabbedW C B Fernando Puttalam group corr Four persons distributing cannabis among retail traders in the Bingiriya area were taken into police custody. These arrests were made by the Bingiriya police on February 11. The suspects reported to be residents of Ja-Ela area had in their possession over two Kgs of cannabis at the time of the arrest. The cannabis was reported to have been brought from the Thanamalwila area. Bingiriya Police are investigating. Training for youthA training program on disaster management among youth club members of the Maligaikadu area in the Karaitivu Divisional Secretariat was held at Maligaikadu Al-Hussain Vidyalaya hall recently. Funds for the program was provided by the Al-Ameen Sri Lanka. The workshop will continue for one year. Trainees will be provided all facilities. Pre-school workshopA one-day workshop to make the public aware of the importance of pre-school education was organised by Al-Ameen Sri Lanka at the Sainthamaruthu Divisional Secretariat in the Kalmunai municipal council area. The workshop was held at Sainthamaruthu Paradise reception hall. A group of 30 women from the Sainthamaruthu Divisional Secretariat area participated. Milad-Un-Nabi ProcessionThe Bohra community of Sri Lanka have organised a procession to mark Milad-Un-Nabi Prophet Mohamed (SA) Birthday celebrations to be held on February 19, commencing at 11.30 am from Maliban Street, Colombo 11. The procession will proceed along Maliban Street, 1st Cross Street, Olcott Mawatha, 2nd Cross Street, Main Street, 3rd Cross Street, Keyzer Street and conclude at Bohra Masjid of 4th Cross Street. Journalist acquitted and dischargedJournalist Chandana Uduwawala was acquitted and discharged in a trespass case by the Mahiyangana Magistrate Ruwandika Marapana last Monday. In this case, Uduwawala was charged by the Hasalaka Police with having forcibly entered the premises of the Hasalaka Gamini Dissanayake Model MV and obstructing the duties of its staff who were public servants. Afghan police detain Taliban attackersAfghanistan: US-led NATO has admitted to the rising power of the militants in Afghanistan despite the presence of 150,000 US-led forces in the country. The Afghan Interior Ministry says police forces have detained five Taliban attackers who intended to target government installations in the southern province of Kandahar. The ministry said police arrested the militants, equipped with explosives-ridden jackets and homemade bombs, on Monday, before they managed to carry out the attacks. Kandahar province is one of the main strongholds of Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan. The militants also seem to be gaining ground in eastern and northern provinces. Those having a degree from a recognized university having experience in arts or media activities are eligible to apply for the postgraduate course and those who have passed the GCE Ordinary Level Examination engaged in writership and communication work can apply for the diploma course. One killed in accidentA luxury bus travelling from Colombo to Anamaduwa collided with a bicycle and the cyclist was killed on the spot. Angry crowds assaulted the bus driver and burned the bus, Anamaduwa police said. The accident had taken place at Uppalawatte on the Chilaw-Anamaduwa road on Tuesday night. Train accidentChula Bandara Kulasekera Anuradhapura Central special and The Colombo-Anuradhapura intercity train which travels upto Vavuniya met with an accident at the Srawasthipura railway station. Several compartments were removed and separated from the train, a Railway Department official said. While the train was approaching the Srawasthipura railway station, four compartments had separated and the train had gone about 800 metres.
