Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi makes Buddhist revival

The Mahanayake Theras of the three Nikayas have pointed out that
there had been a Buddhist revival at national and international level
through the program the Government is undertaking in view of the 2600th
Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi.
The Maha Sangha left for India yesterday morning to take with them a
sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi. The Maha Sangha met Prime Minister D M
Jayaratne Tuesday prior to their departure and informed him of their
mission. The Maha Sangha headed by Kelaniya University Chancellor Ven
Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thera stressed that the taking of the Bo
sapling to India was a historic event.
The Maha Sangha appreciated the cooperation extended by President
Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister D M Jayaratne to achieve success of
the effort. The Maha Sangha made special mention of the fact that it was
encouraging that the Prime Minister was making arrangements to observe
the 2600th Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi celebrations on a grand scale.
The Prime Minister said action had been taken to hold the 2600th
Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi festival at the international level.
