Painting is what comes through imagination and fantasy. Art means the
reflection of life. Artist cannot make a clean breast of descriptions of
what he paints. Although painting is done impeccably the painter is not
that impeccable since he cannot explain what he means by his work.
Alex Stewart whose first painting exhibition was held in 2009 has
registered his second attempt this year. His second painting exhibition
in Sri Lanka is now open for those who love fancy paintings at Barefoot
Gallery, Colombo 3. The exhibition will remain open until February 27.
“These paintings reflect something of my deepening recollections of
travelling in Sri Lanka over last 15 years: watching street life,
reading the paper and listening to stories and experiences of those
around me.” Alex said.
The exhibition is christened as ‘Once Upon a Time’ which sounds
significant. The exhibition is just the story of life. “In childhood we
listened to fairytales. They begin usually with once upon a time. So I
am telling the story of life. When you read a book you are inadvertently
persuaded to imagine the surroundings the writer tries to draw in our
minds. But I’m doing the opposite. I present the imagination within me.
Then the viewer would be thinking of the story woven around my
imagination.” Alex added.
The employment of watercolours in his painting speaks for versatility
and depth of the painter and his imagination beyond our reach.
