Captain D P Cooray felicitated

Sir James and Lady Peiris Cheshire Home held a felicitation ceremony for its out going Chairman Captain D P Cooray who served the Chairman of the home for over 44 years till the age of 92.

Sir James and Lady Peiris Cheshire Home was established in 1966 and the founder of the home was late Group Captain Lord Cheshire. The objective of the home was to help prevent or alleviate stress in families with handicapped members and enable disabled people to continue living at the home with medication and caring.

Captain Cooray was elected Chairman in 1967 and continued his service with the support of board of management. The home served thousands of persons who were physically and mentally handicapped.

The Government provides an annual grant but this is inadequate, the present Chairman Thilak Amendra said . The home also depends on its many friends and well wishers for support and encouragement.

Leonard Cheshire Disability operates in over 55 countries in partnership with 251 Cheshire services around the world. There are 83 services in the UK itself. In Sri Lanka, Cheshire Homes are conducted in Negombo, Mount Lavinia, Galle and Trincomalee.

Cheshire Home serves people regardless of their colour, race or creed are provided facilities for their physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Present Chairman Amendra told the Daily News that sufficient funds have been raised to carry out the programs that help the inmates. Milk food, drugs, medicines, toiletry, clothes and linen are provided for the residents with the support of donors.
