Landslide warnings still valid

Landslides warnings issued in certain areas of the Badulla, Kandy,
Nuwara Eliya and Matale districts are still valid. There is a landslide
risk in these areas, eventhough the rain has ceased during the last few
days, National Building Research Organization(NBRO), Landslide Division
Head, R M S Bandara said .
A landslide warning was issued by the NBRO to residents of the above
areas. These four areas have received high rainfalls during the last few
weeks.
A number of landslides were recorded from these areas during the last
few weeks. If it rains, there is a possibility of landslides in many
areas .
The NBRO plans to resettle the families in safe zones as soon as
possible. The NBRO is still engaged in conducting research about these
lands. According to the Disaster Management Centre, a landslide has been
reported from the Kalaganwatta and High forest GN division in the
Walapane area.
Thirty Buddhist monks were temporary evacuated to a safer place
following a landslide threat in the Haliela area. A landslide in the
Punchi Rattota GN Division in Rattota has damaged the Matale road. There
is a possibility of landslides in several areas in Kandy and Nuwara
Eliya.
Meanwhile, thunder showers will develop at several places in the
Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and in the Galle and Matara
districts during the afternoon or night today. There will be scattered
showers in the Eastern, Uva and Hambantota districts. |
