Rs 80,000 necklace theft: Two held

Two suspects were taken into custody on suspicion of robbing A gold necklace valued at Rs 80,000 near Kotan Kadaya in the North Magala area in the Uragasmansandiya police area.

The suspects aged 18 and 20 were also in possession of a hand grenade, a seven and a half inch knife, the robbed necklace and a motorcycle used for the robbery.


Three treasure hunters caught in the act

Three suspected treasure hunters were caught in the Act in the Wilpattu National Park by the Vilachhciya Police on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said on interrogation they were found to be members of the civil security service.

The arrest was made 10 km inside the national park.

Police also seized several archaeological objects and several implements from their possession.

Investigations are continuing.


Suspect remanded for theft

A man suspected of stealing goods valued at Rs 28,000 from a house in Kohuwala was remanded by the Nugegoda Magistrate.

Police said the suspect had stolen cigarettes from a shop in Panadura and two rings from a blind man in Wellawatta.

The total value of the stolen goods is Rs 100,000.

The suspect is a drug addict.


Scouts cycle tour

The Sri Lanka Scouts Movement is organizing a bicycle tour from Point Pedro to Devundara. This will start from Point Pedro today and will reach Devundara on February 22. The tour starting from Point Pedro will reach Devundara through Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Matale, Kandy, Kegalle, Nittambuwa, Colombo, Kalutara and Matara.

The cyclists will ride for 660 kms and regional Scouts Societies have organized to conduct several ceremonies to welcome the cyclists in their areas.

The aim of this cycle tour is to express gratitude to the President who showed the world that any community in free Sri Lanka can act and work together with other communities without any obstacles.

The tour also marks the scouts centenary which falls next year.


AGM

The next Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Association will be held on Sunday, February 27 from 9 am at SLLI auditorium, Panagoda.

Association's General Secretary Capt Sisira Bandara informs, all members have duly been informed of the AGM.

Any suggestion to be made at this meeting should be forwarded to the General Secretary at least by February 24.

Transport will be provided for outstation members at the Ex Servicemen's Association, Bristol Street, Colombo 1 from 7.30 am. Members are required to be present with their Ex Servicemen ID card together with invitation.

 


 

Indian Film Festival from Feb 18-24

An Indian Film Festival will be held at the Sri Lanka National Film Corporation Cinema Hall from February 18-24.

The cultural section of the Indian High Commission and Sri Lanka National Film Corporation have jointly organized this, in keeping line with the commemoration of the 64th National Independence Day of India.

The inaugural ceremony of the festival will be held on February 14 at 6.00 pm under the patronage of Mass Media and Information Minister Dr Keheliya Rambukwella and Indian High Commissioner Ashok K Kantha.

This festival commences with the screening of 3 idiots at 6.00 pm on this day.

During this festival on February 19 - 2.30 pm Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, 6.00 pm - Awaara, February 20 - 2.30 pm - Abhiman, 6.00 pm - Aab, February 21 - 5.30 pm Sangam, February 22 - 5.30 pm - Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, February 23 - 5.30 pm - Parineetha, February 24 - 5.30 pm - Hum Saath Saath Hain will be screened for the spectators free of charge.


Costly transport for two

Balangoda Magistrate and District Judge Namal Bandara Balalle imposed a fine of Rs 60,500 on K H Upali Ranjith Fernando of Bathgammulla, Ragama and J Prasad Adisa of Thotupola Rd, Welisara, Ragama when they pleaded guilty to transporting 13 buffaloes and three cattle in a lorry illegally.

A police team led by SI Chandrakumara made this arrest when they were transporting the cattle from Hambegamuwa to Ragama and produced them before Court.


Tourist info centre

A tourist information and tourist comfort centre has been established at the Badagamuwa Tourist Conservation area in Kurunegala.

It was opened by Minister Basil Rajapaksa last week.

This centre was built by the Wayamba Development authority at a cost of Rs 30 million. The Badagamuwa Forest Conservation area which is on an extent of 207 hectares has also been declared a Tourist Zone of Education and environment under the Forest Conservation Department.

A Tourist Rest has also been established here for those travelling to Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, Vavuniya and Jaffna.


Kasippu haul in Dambulla

Two women distributing Kasippu in Mirisgoniyawa area, were arrested with 15,000 ml of illicit brew by Dambulla Police.

Police said the women had been engaged in this business for a long period.


Missing

Police seek public assistance to trace Willie Fernando (82) of No. 174, Allen Avenue, Dehiwela who is missing from his residence since February 12, 2011. He is the father Wismuni and Kanchana Fernando of Dehiwela.

Any information about him could be given to the Dehiwela Police Station or to the nearest Police Station or to telephone nos - 0777-330124 - 0777344320.


Addresses incorrect

Three of the candidates contesting the Gampola Town Council election under JVP ticket have not mentioned their correct addresses in the nomination list, according to police investigations.

The police found out that there were no such candidates resident in the houses of the addresses they have given in the nomination list. The police also said that even according to the electoral lists they were not resident in the respective addresses. The police are due to bring this to the notice of the Elections Commissioner.
