Tree felling cop bailed

The Police Inspector and the other person who had been remanded for alleged tree felling in a four-acre land belonging to the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy were released on a bail of ten million rupees each by Kandy Magistrate A U B Karaliyedda on Monday.

The Magistrate also ordered each of them to produce 2.5 million rupees worth of assets guarantee and certificates to prove their residence.

These two persons were taken into custody by the Peradeniya Police last month on suspicion that they had been felling trees unlawfully in the land belonging to the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. They were found to have felled trees worth two hundred thousand rupees.

The Police detected the timber from a timber mill in Balagolla to which the suspects had sold them.

This unlawful act had been committed when the suspect Police Inspector was functioning as the Security Officer of the Diyawadana Nilame of the Dalada Maligawa.
