The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) yesterday raided a shop at 4th Cross Street, Pettah where 12,000 Kilograms of rice was hoarded by traders.

The Authority carried out this raid for the second consecutive day to recover rice stocks hidden by traders to create an artificial rice shortage.

According to Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando, the CAA has been directed to take stern action against traders who hoard stocks and create an artificial rice shortage in the local market.

He reiterated that the country has ample stocks of rice in stores and will leave no room for unscrupulous traders to manipulate rice prices on their own accord in the local market.

The Authority on Thursday nabbed a trader at Moor Street, Pettah where more than 250 bags of rice was hoarded. Authority officials carried out over 100 raids on the same day.

Minister Fernando said the highest number of raids were carried out in the Moneragala, Matale, Polonnaruwa, Colombo and Kalutara districts.
