Flood hit food, drugs to be destroyed

The Health Ministry will make arrangements to destroy all food and drugs affected by floods, a Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman circulars will be issued to food and drug inspectors to inspect food and drugs stored in refrigerators belonging to shops located in flood affected areas and destroy them if not suitable for consumption.

Sri Lanka Saukyadana Movement will send doctors, nurses and pharmacists to flood affected areas.

All international organizations including UNICEF, WFP and UNFPA promised to support the Government to assist flood victims. Heads of the Medical Supplies Division, Epidemiology Unit, Nutrition Unit and many other units of the Health Ministry were present at a discussion held yesterday, the spokesman said.

The Ministry will also make arrangements to send medical teams to all isolated places where people are trapped due to floods.

Teams of epidemiologists will be sent to all flood affected districts. Pregnant mothers who are about to go into labour will be admitted to hospitals.

Family Health Officers will look after all the other pregnant mothers, especially at night, he added. NG
