Tunisia interim Govt reviews security
Tunisia: Tunisia's interim Government has met to review the tense
security situation in the country weeks after ex-President Zine El
Abidin Ben Ali was ousted in a historic revolution. This is Prime
Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi's first meeting since the Government was
reshuffled on January 27.
Sources say the discussions held in the meeting included lootings in
the central town of Kasserine, where hundreds of people have rallied
demanding action against vandals. The United Nations announced that some
219 people have been killed and 510 others injured amid the popular
revolt that ousted long-time leader Ben Ali.
Ben Ali's 23 years of dictatorship, which was marred by repeated
human rights violations and torture, ended last month after weeks of
street protests.
He escaped to Saudi Arabia on January 14.The uprising in Tunisia
inspired some Arab countries in the Middle East to raise their voice
against their autocratic Governments.
