Seminar and workshop on farming

A seminar and workshop to give an awareness on farming to State officials and farmers to protect the farmer population will be held at Thambuththegama today under the patronage of Indigenous Medicine Minister Salinda Dissanayake. This will begin at 9 am today at the Human Resource Development Centre of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Development Authority.

This will be attended by a number of scholars including Parakrama Weligamage of the Post Graduate Division of the Peradeniya University.


AGM

The fourth Annual General Meeting of Agri Alumni Association, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka will be held on February 5 at 4.30 pm at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences Auditorium, Belihul Oya.

Viharamahadevi BV marks 35 years

An Adhishtana pooja will be held today to mark the 34th anniversary of Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya. Kiribathgoda.

It will be held under the patronage of Ven Galle Kumara Kashyapa Thera.

A blood donation campaign, an alms giving to 34 bhikkhus and the reconstructions of the Kiribathgoda Base Hospital by the school's health unit are some other events to be held to mark the school's anniversary.


Sports meet

The Annual Sports Meet of WP/Kal/Wadduwa Central College will be held with the assistance of staff members, parents and the well-wishers on February 8 at the College Grounds.


Book launch

The launch of "Laws of Sri Lanka Volumes 1 and 2" will take place on February 2 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI); No 100, Independence Square, Po Box 1203, Colombo 07 at 4.15 pm. Chief Justice, Asoka De Silva, Justice Minister Rauf Hakeem and Attorney General Mohan Pieris, will be present.


Training course for HR personnel

The Sri Lanka Tourist Hotels Management Institute has commenced the training course for 2011 to train the human resources personnel necessary for tourist hotels. As the youth have tended to get the training under this program, the number of trainees this year has been doubled.

This training program has been started in hotels at Colombo, Kandy, Ratnapura, Bandarawela, Anuradhapura and Koggala.

The training course is of 11 months and during the first five months the trainees get a comprehensive theoretical knowledge in the hotel industry and they will be given practical training during the next six months.

A certificate recognized by both the local and foreign institutions will be awarded to those who successfully complete the course following which it would be easy for them to find employment.


Motor cyclist dies on admission

A seriously injured motor cyclist who met with an accident near the second mile post on the Puttalam Anuradhapura road last Friday succumbed to his injuries after been admitted to the Puttalam Hospital.

The dead man is identified as AHM Asnaf (43), a resident of Marikkari Street, Puttalam.

The motorcycle and lorry were travelling in the same direction.

The collision took place when the lorry tried to overtake the motor cycle. Puttalam police arrested the lorry driver.


Cannabis cultivation destroyed

A team from the Lunugamvehera police raided a cannabis cultivation in the Lunugamvehera National Park and discovered 16.5 kilograms of dried cannabis and 10 kilograms of cannabis seeds.

Police discovered the cannabis cultivation at the park in the Rathmaluwa area on a tip-off. The cultivation which was about eight feet in height was nearly two acres in extent. Police destroyed the entire cultivation but no arrests were made. Police believe the suspects have fled the area and are conducting further investigations.


Appointment letters

The presenting of appointment letters to 844 Medical Graduates for their internship will take place at 2 pm today (31) at the BMICH, Colombo, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena will be the chief guest. These medical graduates will be appointed to 15 Teaching Hospitals, three Provincial General Hospitals, 14 District Hospitals and 16 Primary Hospitals for their internship.


Program to modernize children’s clinics

All maternity and children’s clinics will be restored and modernized under a program guided by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa. The Minister has instructed Attorney-at-Law Pushpa Rajapaksa to carry out this restoration program. Under this program action will be taken to restore all such clinics paying special attention on children’s and maternity clinics. An investigation revealed that these clinics were not functioning properly as there had not been any restoration work carried out for the past several years. Many such clinics in the Biyagama, Kirindiwela, Kirillawala, Ranmuthugala and Gonahena are now being renovated under this program.


Jay walkers fined

One hundred and twenty persons in Kandy town who crossed the roads disregarding the Zebra crossings were each fined Rs 750 by the Kandy Magistrate.

Fines totalling Rs 90,000 were imposed on these Jay walkers. Kandy Traffic Police apprehended 252 people for Jay walking and prosecuted 120.

Summons were issued on the balance 132 people to appear in Court.
