"About 80 percent of construction work of the section is already over," a Highways Ministry spokesman said.

He said that the travel time from Matara to Colombo will be drastically reduced with the opening of this road and the travel time will be about two hours. The Government has given priority to this project.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has paid special attention for this matter and instructed officials to expedite the work, the spokesman said.

The project funded by the Asian Development Bank and Japan Bank for International Co-operation will have 11 entry and exit ramps. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 85 billion.

The spokesman said that the Government had made the biggest allocation of Rs 102 billion to the Highways Ministry to providing an efficient and systematic road network.

He added maintaining of a proper road network is essential for the country to carry out its development programs.
