Southern expressway section opens in June

A section of the Southern expressway between Makumbura in Kottawa and
Pinnaduwa in Galle will be opened to the public by June this year.

"About 80 percent of construction work of the section is already
over," a Highways Ministry spokesman said.
He said that the travel time from Matara to Colombo will be
drastically reduced with the opening of this road and the travel time
will be about two hours. The Government has given priority to this
project.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has paid special attention for this
matter and instructed officials to expedite the work, the spokesman
said.
The project funded by the Asian Development Bank and Japan Bank for
International Co-operation will have 11 entry and exit ramps. The total
estimated cost of the project is Rs 85 billion.
The spokesman said that the Government had made the biggest
allocation of Rs 102 billion to the Highways Ministry to providing an
efficient and systematic road network.
He added maintaining of a proper road network is essential for the
country to carry out its development programs. |
