“This is phase one of the project and will be run by coal. It will
generate 300 MW. Two more similar power plants will be added later. That
is the second stage,” said Project Director - Mechanical R.
Lokubalasooriya.
“This is a thermal generation project and it is new to Sri Lanka
because coal is used as the fuel. That is the project’s speciality,” he
said.
“The first stage is for 300 MW and the total project is for 900MW,
the other two will be constructed under the second phase,” said Project
Director - Electrical P C C Perera.
Senior Project Director W D N Xavier said work on the second stage
will be underway by 2013. The 300 MW plant is expected to generate 2,000
million units of power a year to the National Grid. By 2014 all three
power plants will be completed,” he said.
The Chinese Government has granted a loan of $415 million for the
project.
The Sri Lanka Government has provided $ 5,300 million for the
infrastructure.
“A 300 MW plant to be powered for one hour requires 114 coal tons.
Coal will be used as fuel for the first time in Sri Lanka.
“The coal will be brought from Indonesia,” Xavier said. |
