The Ceylinco Diabetes Centre has partnered with Vision Care Optical Services to offer visitors to the Centre a facility to obtain spectacles at the same premises. A new Vision Care branch located on the 2nd floor of the Ceylinco Diabetes Centre Park Street Colombo 02, now provides comprehensive eye testing services and a wide range of spectacle frames and lenses, the Centre announced.

The unit will also cater to members of the public who wish to undergo vision tests, buy spectacles or sunglasses. This branch is open from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm.

The new branch was declared open by Ceylinco Healthcare Services Ltd (CHSL) Chairman R Renganathan and the Vision Care CEO Dasantha Fonseka. “The Ceylinco Diabetes Centre seeks to provide all specialised services related to the management of diabetes and its complications at a single location,” Renganathan said. “The opening of the Vision Care branch is therefore an important value addition and an enhancement of convenience.”

Dasantha Fonseka said that Vision Care is happy to be associated with Ceylinco Diabetes Centre to provide an opportunity to diabetic patients to get the best eye care products at an affordable price.

Senior Medical Officer at the Ceylinco Diabetes Centre Dr Charuky Weerasuriya said the three major eye problems that people with diabetes need to be conscious about are cataracts, glaucoma, and retinopathy.

Caltex magnanimity on HIV/AIDS victims:

Awareness against social stigma

Chevron Lubricants Lanka PLC, manufacturer and marketer of Caltex branded Lubricants in Sri Lanka, recently joined hands with The Salvation Army for the annual HIV & AIDs families’ get-together. Over 400 families from this community participated islandwide. Caltex has worked previously on several HIV/AIDs prevention programs.

This special event was designed to provide the opportunity for the HIV/AIDS infected community to reach out to one another. Infected families from AIDS organizations such as Lanka Pulse, Positive Women Network and Positive Hope Allianz were amongst those who participated. Children below the age of 10 also participated.

The annual get-together was held at the Salvation Army Sri Lanka headquarters in Colombo. The day’s agenda comprised of several team-building and confidence boosting activities for the individuals and families. Songs, Games, Drama, Mimes and a family gift-giveaway segment were also organized.

“Though the rate of prevalence is low in our country today, it’s spreading faster than ever before with the country recording close to 300 patients a year. The sustainability we speak of will not be a reality unless we protect one another. All Sri Lankans need to join hands to fight against this. It is important for each one of us to advocate a change through awareness, whilst managing the social stigma factor in a sensible manner. Due to the issue of social stigma, proper preventative and curative treatment is avoided by most individuals” said, Chevron Lubricants Lanka PLC Managing Director/CEO Kishu Gomes.

“Communities respond in fear and are deliberately ignorant to issues related to HIV and AIDS. Integrating this community, and giving them hope and confidence will help them to interact with the society and contribute meaningfully again” said Salvation Army HIV and AIDS Coordinator, Swarna De Silva.

Chevron has always had an unstinted passion towards community development. The company recently stepped forward to help eradicate the spread of AIDS through a major awareness campaign for over 1,000 private sector employees in the country.

A series of awareness building seminars were conducted together with the Lanka Business Coalition on HIV and AIDS, with the specific aim of building AIDS ambassadors on “Safety, Protection and Awareness”. For several years, Chevron has partnered in numerous rural and community development initiatives, practiced as a concerted strategy to uplift, support and promote a better tomorrow for all its valuable stakeholders.

MDIS awarded Edu Trust certification

The Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) has been awarded the Edu Trust Certification (four years) by the Council for Private Education (CPE) in 2010.

This certification is a significant milestone for MDIS and attests to the Institute’s exemplary education and business excellence standards, a media release from the Institute said.

The award further affirms MDIS’ strong commitment to delivering high quality standards of education to its students. MDIS is among the first batch of PEIs to be registered under the Enhanced Registration Framework (ERF) by CPE in May 2010. MDIS inked a landmark deal with Education@Iskandar on June 28, 2010 in Kuala Lumpur to purchase a 30-acre campus in Iskandar, Johor to build its second overseas education campus at EduCity at Iskandar, Malaysia.

The S$ 130 million investment, which includes land and building costs, is the first major deal by a Singaporean group in the special economic zone.

The MDIS student hostel was the first hostel in Singapore to win the Building and Construction Authority Green Mark Award (Gold Plus) for its enviormentally friendly architectural design.
