Fishmongers attacked

More than two vehicles were damaged and several people injured after a group of gangsters who crashed into the Chilaw fish market started attacking the fishmongers indiscriminately.

According to Police spokesman, the attack took place owing to a longstanding dispute between the people of Vella, a fishing village and the fishmongers in the Chilaw fish market. This fishing village is situated in close proximity to the Fish market.

A source from the Fish market yesterday told the Daily News, the attack took place after the fishmongers started using the weighing scales provided by the Chilaw Urban Council free of charge.

A group of people who provided weighing scales to the fish market has collected some form of tax from the fishmongers.
