NIC within two weeks

The Registration of Persons Department has implemented a program to provide National Identity Cards within two weeks with the receipt of the applications, Commissioner General Jagath Wijeweera told the Daily News yesterday.

He said the Department tested this simplified method during the first week of January as a pilot program and obtained successful results.

Therefore this method is followed by the Department at present to issue Identity Cards for the applicants without a delay, he said.

He also noted that the Department is ready to issue any number of Identity Cards promptly before the Local Government Elections, if the need arises, and the Department is capable of handling this task.

He mentioned that he would discuss with the Elections Commissioner whether there is a necessity to issue temporary Identity Cards prior to the election.
