Alliance Francaise de Kotte presents Nostalgie – an expo of black and white photographs by Kumar de Silva.

The Alliance Francaise de Kotte at 139 Jawatte Road comes alive this weekend with images of France in black and white splendor, as media and television personality Kumar de Silva launches ‘Nostalgie’ – his maiden exhibition of black and white photographs.

Chief Guests at the opening will be Director General of the Ministry of Defence Lakshman Hulugalle and Dilrukshi Hulugalle. The 30 photographs give guests a taste of France’s multi- faceted variety from urban Paris to rural Britanny and southern Montpellier, from escargots for dinner to alfresco lunching, from stilt walkers to itinerant musicians and wayside artists and lots more interesting images of French life and living.

Says the photographer, “Nostalgie is a triple celebration of the happy francophone and the incurable francophile in me. This month, 25 years ago, I joined the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka and began hosting ‘Bonsoir’ on ITN.

It also marks 25 years since I first set foot in Paris …. Need I say more ?”. Director of the Alliance Francaise de Kotte, Bertrand Dufieux, said, “We are very happy to open our cultural season for 2011 with ‘Nostalgie’. Kumar has had long and close ties with France.

Talking with him and seeing his photographs, I understand why he chose to the name ‘nostalgie’. It is a feeling that is rooted in the longing of the soul for what it considers its second country. Kumar’s nostalgia for France is very well reflected and with a lot of sensitivity - in these beautiful images - of a land that has adopted him”.

Nostalgie is open to the public from January 23 to February 6 weekdays from 10 am to 6 pm and weekends from 10 am to 4 pm.

The AF de Kotte at 139, Jawatte Road, Colombo 05 is Sri Lanka’s newest, and only recognized French language and cultural centre serving the Colombo. Unlike other such language centres operating in Colombo, the AF de Kotte is affiliated to the Foundation Alliance Francaise de Paris and enjoys the full patronage of the Government of France and the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka.
