Three from Kandy in WC team

Three cricketers from Kandy were selected to represent Sri Lanka in
the World Cup Cricket tournament to be held on February 19.

They are skipper Kumar Sangakkara, Muttiah Muralitharan and Chamara
Kapugedara.
Sangakkara 33 is a product of Trinity College, Kandy and he is the
best batsman in the world at present. Being a former cricket captain of
Dharmaraja College, Kandy this writer is proud that he was able to coach
Kumar at the Junior level at Trinity College, Kandy when he was coaching
in the School during early 90s.
Muttiah Muralitharan 38 the world test cricket wicket record holder
with 800 wickets, is a product of St. Anthony's College, Katugastota who
was coached by Sunil Fernando who is the present cricket coach of
Central Province.
Chamara Kantha Kapugedara 23 is the first Dharmaraja College
cricketer to be selected for the Test team after Sonny Yatawara and TB
Kehelgamuwa who were selected for the Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) cricket
prior to gaining Test status. Kapugedara was coached by former
Dharmaraja skipper DGW Karunaratne. |
