SLC inter-provincial 50 overs tournament:

Chandimal pilots Wayamba to victory

Former Sri Lanka youth captain Dinesh Chandimal returned to form with an unbeaten 92 as the reigning champions Wayamba cruised to a 47-run victory over Basnahira on the Duckworth and Lewis scoring system in their SLC inter provincial 50 overs tournament opening match worked off at the SSC ground in Maitland Place yesterday.

Chandimal who came into the crease in the second over of the innings hoisted three sixes and struck eight boundaries during his 83 ball knock as Wayamba reached an impressive 166 for 2 when bad light halted play in the 30th over.

Together with skipper Mahela Jayawardena the pair took the game away from their opponents while adding an unfinished 116 runs for the third wicket. Basnahira looked like making a match of it when they struck early removing opener Dilshan Munaweera in the second over.

Wayamba however recovered to a certain extent through a second wicket stand of 41 runs between Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne. Skipper Mahela Jayawardena then joined Chandimal and the pair went about their task in style to seal the match in their favour.

Jayawardena also completed an unbeaten half century from 64 deliveries inclusive of one six and four boundaries.

Earlier Basnahira put into bat recovered well to reach a healthy 217 for 9 from their restricted 43 overs. They of course lost inform opening batsman Jeevantha Kulatunga in the very first ball of the innings.

However the second wicket pair of skipper Tillekeratne Dilshan and Malinda Warnapura repaired the early damage with a stand of 56 runs. However thereafter they could not build up any substantial partnership while losing wickets at regular intervals.

Middle order batsman Roshane Silva gave the Basnahira innings a tremendous boost during the latter stages with an unbeaten 40 from 42 deliveries inclusive of one six and two boundaries. Opening bowler Chanaka Welagedera and Sachithra Senanayake had three wickets each.

Basnahira: 217 for 9 in 45 overs (T. Dilshan 58, M. Warnapura 26, C. Vaas 29, R. Silva 40n.o, C. Welagedera 3 for 54, R. Herath 2 for 38, S. Senanayake 3 for 37)

Wayamba: 166 for 2 in 29.1 overs (D. Chandimal 92 n.o, M. Jayawardena 55 n.o)
