The Town Hall Foundation held a series
of religious activities to mark its centenary anniversary
recently. An all-night pirith chanting ceremony and
Sangagatha Dakshinawa for 100 Buddhist monks were also
included in the program. Here, Culture and the Arts Minister

Big onions:
Second shipment in market today
The second shipment of big onions will be released
to the market from today.
Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston
Fernando said that the stock of 200,000 kilos of big onions imported
from Pakistan will be sold at all Sathosa, Co-op City and Mini Co-op
City outlets.
The Minister instructed Lanka Sathosa Chairman Nalin
Fernando to distribute the imported big onion stocks to Sathosa
outlets islandwide. A kilo of imported big onions will be sold at Rs
125. There is no big onion shortage and sufficient stocks are
continuously being supplied to the market. IRR
Reservoir gates open

Twenty of the 30 spill gates of the Rajanganaya
Reservoir have been kept open amidst torrential rain experienced in
the Rajarata area.
Rajangana Irrigation Engineer M J M Kaleel said that
the 20 spill gates of the reservoirs were kept open upto a height of
six feet enabling the flow of 31,000 cubic feet of water per second,
by yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, an appeal has been made to the villagers
in the areas to be extra vigilant as the water levels may increase.
Samarakoon to be felicitated
Centenary celebrations of Late Ananda Samarakoon,
lyricist and composer of the National Anthem will be held at Temple
Trees on January 13, at 10 am under the patronage of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa, with the participation of Cultural and Arts
Minister T B Ekanayake. The President is due to garland the statue
of Ananda Samarakoon and the commemoration lecture will be delivered
by Prof Sunil Ariyaratne.
Body found
Sarath WELAGEDERA- Elahera Group
The body of a person, identified as A P Karunaratne
(45) of Akaragallewa in Elahera has been found by Bakamuna Police
when the body had been washed away from the Ambanganga at Elahera.
OIC Police Inspector Palitha Ilangasinghe said that
this person had fallen to the river while he was crossing a bridge
across the Amban Ganga.
Uthuru Vasanthaya powers Jaffna round the clock

The Ceylon Electricity Board’s Chunnakam electrical
office serves to consumers under the Uthuru Vasanthaya Program. The
people in Jaffna get 24 hour electricity supply with the addition of
two private electricity suppliers.
The Jaffna Electrical Engineering Office supplies
electricity to 105,000 houses and institutes which is a 66 percent

Ramanidaran said 12,000 new connections were given last year.
Television kills two-year-old

A two-year-old died when a television fell on his
head while he tried to climb the TV stand.
U A Lahiru Prasad Ranasingha of Rathgalla, was with
his mother at home when he tried to climb the TV stand.
The TV had fallen onto his head, causing serious
injuries. He was rushed to the General Hospital, Kandy where he was
treated at the Intensive Care Unit when he later died.
The incident took place on January 4 and the child
died at the ICU on January 6. Police are investigating an inquiry.
Nachchaduwa spill gates open

The water level of Nachchaduwa tank suddenly rose by
one and half inches Monday around 9.00 pm while all spill gates have
been opened, Hindogama police OIC Thilanga Fernando said. He said
people living in the vicinity of Maela, Heanela and Malwathuoya have
been advised to vacate their houses due to the threat. The OIC said
traffic along Anuradhapura-Nachchiduwa road has been hampered due to
falling of huge trees.
Doctor’s house burgled
Thieves had entered the residence of a doctor living
in Etampitiya off Bandarawela and alleged to have removed jewellery
to the value of Rs 209,000 recently.
Bandarawela Police are carrying out preliminary
inquiries.
Get-together
A get-together and fellowship dinner organized by
the Old Boys Association of St Servatius College, Matara will be
held at the Pearl Cliff Hotel, Browns Hill, Matara on January 15.
Sanath Jayasuriya MP will be the Chief Guest.
