CWE to ameliorate consumer hardships

Vegetable stocks from Nuwara Eliya will be transported to Colombo using Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) trucks for the benefit of consumers.

Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando said that he instructed Sathosa Chairman Eraj Fernando to obtain adequate vegetable stocks from the Dedicated Economic Centre Keppetipola, Nuwara Eliya to distribute them through Sathosa outlets across the country to consumers at concessionary rates. There are reports of a shortage of vegetables in the market owing to torrential rains damaging a number of vegetable crops.

Lorries are not operating due to bad weather making hardships for consumers.

This problem will be sorted out within the next few days with the deployment of CWE trucks to transport vegetables from Nuwara Eliya to Colombo, the Minister said.

He said five trucks carrying adequate vegetable stocks are due in Colombo from Nuwara Eliya today. IR
